Getting to Know St. Cloud: A Lakefront City With a Civil War-Era Story

Neighborhood spotlight · St. Cloud

Just east of Kissimmee, St. Cloud has its own lakefront, its own downtown, and one of the more unusual founding stories in Central Florida.

Ask people in Osceola County about St. Cloud and you’ll often hear about the lake first. The city sits on the southern shore of East Lake Tohopekaliga, about 26 miles southeast of Orlando, and US 192 runs through town to connect it with Kissimmee and the attractions corridor to the west.

If you’re exploring Central Florida beyond the parks, here’s a quick introduction.

A town founded for Union veterans

St. Cloud’s founding story is unusual. In 1909, the Seminole Land and Investment Company bought about 35,000 acres of the former Disston sugar plantation and set it aside as a colony for Union veterans of the Civil War, promoted through the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). That’s where the city’s nickname, “the Friendly Soldier City,” comes from.

You can still see that history downtown. The Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall at 1101 Massachusetts Avenue was built in 1914 by members of the local GAR post and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Downtown: a walkable grid on New York Avenue

Historic downtown St. Cloud centers on New York Avenue. Its anchor is the Hunter Arms, a Mediterranean Revival hotel that opened in 1927 and fills about three-quarters of a city block. Florida’s Division of Historical Resources notes that other New York Avenue businesses of that era used similar Spanish-influenced details, a local style people called “Spaniflora.” St. Cloud Main Street, the downtown nonprofit, runs regular programming:

  • Historic Walking Tours are generally held on the last Wednesday of the month. The next one is Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. ($10).
  • Historic Ghost Tours follow that night from 8 to 9 p.m. ($20), starting from the Main Street office at 903 Pennsylvania Avenue. They’re generally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month alongside the Monthly Market, from September through May.
  • Halloween downtown is Saturday, Oct. 31: Trick & Trunk-or-Treat from 5 to 8 p.m., then the Maniacs & Witches Block Party from 8 to 11 p.m. Admission is free.

If you’re in Kissimmee that week, Boo! on Broadway is the night before, on Oct. 30. Our fall events roundup has more.

The lakefront is the city’s backyard

St. Cloud’s Lakefront Park, at 1104 Lakeshore Boulevard, is the kind of public space that shapes daily routines. The city lists a playground, splash pad, sand beach, fishing pier, pavilions, a volleyball court, and more than 2 miles of bike path. It also has a public marina with 143 boat slips and a boat ramp that’s open 24 hours. Trailer parking runs $6 a day or by annual permit.

East Lake Toho is a big, open lake with grassy, lily-covered shallows, so mornings and evenings are the prime time for a walk or a ride. For a longer outing, the Neptune Road pathway heads east from Kissimmee’s lakefront toward St. Cloud. Our park-free evening on Kissimmee’s lakefront covers the other end.

What to check if you’re house hunting here

St. Cloud includes historic streets near downtown, established subdivisions, and newer master-planned communities, so the right fit depends on what you want day to day. A few things worth checking:

  • City or county? A St. Cloud mailing address doesn’t always mean the home is inside city limits. Some are in unincorporated Osceola County. That affects utilities, permits, and local rules, including any short-term rental rules. Verify with the city or county and the HOA.
  • Your commute. Drive it at rush hour before you decide. Our route guide explains how.
  • Monthly costs. HOA dues, CDD assessments, and insurance vary widely by community. See the real monthly cost of owning a home in Central Florida.
